Performance Tip: Why Is Your Keyword Quality Score Low?

Performance Tips Header
3 Reasons Your Keyword Has a Low Quality Score

March 28, 2013 - As a Customer Success Specialist here at WordStream, the most frequent questions I get about AdWords always concern Google’s Quality Score metric.

While Google assigns a Quality Score to a number of areas in your account, some of the most vital are your keyword Quality Scores. Now, there are a number of reasons why you may have a low keyword Quality Score; in this blog post I will highlight three. However it’s important to understand that Quality Score is industry dependent. Therefore, accounts that advertise in fields like insurance, software technology, loans, and mortgages tend to have lower Quality Scores because there is more competition. Yet if you eliminate the competitiveness of the field from the equation, Quality Score is calculated in the same way for all advertisers.

Here are the three mains reasons why you may have a low KEYWORD Quality Score:

Reason #1: Your CTR stinks.

The main determinant in a good Quality Score is a high click-through rate...

Performance Tip: When Is 2% Not a Good CTR?

Is 2% Good Enough? The Relationship of CTR & Ad Position

March 14, 2013 - Everyone always asks me, “What’s a good click-through rate?” The standard answer I always hear is 2%. My answer is always, it depends.

If you don’t want your Quality Scores to suffer, you need to think twice about always targeting a 2% CTR. Quality Scores are very dependent on your CTR by Average Position, so it’s worth getting a good understanding of what this means.

So, what does it mean? People will usually click on the top ad of a SERP (search engine results page), because, well, it’s the first thing that they see. Position 1 will always have a high CTR, and CTR will continue to descend naturally in positions 2, 3, 4 and so on. This being the case, Google knows that position 1 and position 4 are not created equal, and therefore does not treat them equally...

Does AdWords Work? How eBay Got it Wrong

March 14, 2013 - There’s a story making the news this week about how eBay wasn’t able to make paid search work for them so they stopped using Google AdWords. Ray Fisman, who wrote up the study for Harvard Business Review, said “Their findings suggest that many paid ads generate virtually no increase in sales, and even for ones that do, the sales benefits are far eclipsed by the cost of the ads themselves.”

I couldn’t help but laugh when I read this, because it’s pretty well-known within the search engine marketing community that eBay is the butt of many jokes when it comes to adopting advertising best practices.

eBay is probably the world’s biggest abuser of an ad writing tactic in AdWords known as Dynamic Keyword Insertion or DKI. As its name suggests, DKI dynamically inserts the user’s query into the headline of your ad. When used correctly, DKI can be a highly effective ad writing technique. But when employed in the way that eBay uses it, the results are disastrous...
