December 27, 2012 Well guys, we got through December and the world didn’t end. I hope you didn’t sell all your possessions or anything rash like that. Awkward!

I’m all about looking forward, but before we rush off into next year, let’s take a quick look back at what happened in 2012.

Our top 10 most popular blog posts this year were:

  1. What Industries Contributed to Google's $37.9 Billion in 2011 Revenues? – For our first infographic of the year, we found the top 10 industries that lay out the most cash on AdWords advertising and delved in to figure out what it said about the state of the economy.
  2. The War on 'Free' Clicks: Think Nobody Clicks on Google Ads? Think Again! – I’m sure you’ve met plenty of people who smugly proclaim that they NEVER click on Google ads. But our research reveals that sponsored ads actually get more clicks than organic results for highly commercial queries!
  3. Google Display Network vs. Facebook Advertising [Infographic] – Facebook may school Google in social, but we think FB could learn a thing or two from Google’s advertising platform.

Performance Tip: Google Remarketing Cheatsheet

Cheatsheet: 12 Steps to Set Up a Remarketing List

December 20, 2012 Remarketing is an incredibly powerful way to target people who have recently visited your site and may be close to making a purchase. By setting up a remarketing campaign, you can "chase" your target customers with relevant display advertising for up to 30 days, so your business stays top of mind,  increasing the chances that they'll eventually convert.

Setting up a remarketing campaign is easy, so why wait? Check out our 12-step guide to creating a remarketing list in Google AdWords. You can also download the free cheatsheet as a PDF to keep on hand.

1. Define your remarketing strategy.
  • Will you target all visitors to your site?
  • Are you only interested in targeting visitors to a specific page?
2. Create the remarketing code.

AdWords > Shared Library > Audiences > + New Audience > Remarketing List

3. Fill in all of the required parameters ...

Reminder: Shutting Down

Feed My Inbox - Confirm your feed

Fellow customers,

After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to shut down Feed My Inbox over the course of the next couple of months.

Timeline

There will be no immediate impact on your account. Email updates will continue and you can still login to add/remove feeds at your liesure.

The same is true for webmasters. Your embedded forms will continue to work and accept subscribers until January 10, 2013.

Starting today (November 9), we will no longer accept new signups or feed subscriptions via FeedMyInbox.com. Again, this does not impact your account.

December 1- all outgoing emails will have a note on top explaining the shut-down

December 10- this is the final day subscription payments will be processed

January 10- no further email updates will be sent to customers

If you are on an annual payment plan, we will be reaching out individually and offering a partial refund based on the last date you were billed.

Feed My Inbox Alternatives

We recommend Blogtrottr. Although we have not tested it extensively, it seems to be closest to the available features we offer. Google Reader is the best available feed reader, although they don't have support for email notifications. You can also generate RSS feed emails using Zapier or Ifft.

To export your feeds, login and visit http://www.feedmyinbox.com/account/export/. An OPML file will download to your computer, which can easily be imported into Blogtrottr or Google Reader.

For webmasters, there are several available RSS to Email companies to host your signup form:

Why?

Long story short, we failed to generate enough revenue to sustain the business long-term and justify the time necessary for ongoing support, maintenance and feature development.

We are incredibly grateful for your support along the way and apologize that it didn't work out differently.

Performance Tip: The 3 Types of Keywords & How to Target Them

The 3 Types of Search Queries and How to Target Them

December 13, 2012 Search queries – the words and phrases that people type into a search box in order to pull up a list of results – come in different flavors. It is commonly accepted that there are three different types of search queries:

  1. Navigational search queries
  2. Informational search queries
  3. Transactional search queries

Let’s go into a little more detail on what these three types of search queries are and how you can target them with your site content.

What Is a Navigational Search Query?

A navigational query is a search query entered with the intent of finding a particular website or webpage. For example, a user might enter "youtube" into Google's search bar to find the YouTube site rather than entering the URL into a browser's navigation bar or using a bookmark. In fact, “facebook” and “youtube” are the top two searches on Google, and these are both navigational queries.

How Should You Target Navigational Search Queries?

The fact is ...
