Should You Advertise on Facebook or the Google Display Network?

 May 17, 2012 – With Facebook’s IPO approaching, everyone is talking about how much Facebook is worth and whether it can live up to its valuation of nearly $100 billion.

A lot depends on whether Facebook can manage to effectively monetize its user base – so far, the company’s advertising arm hasn’t kept pace with the growth of its social network. The costs of advertising on Facebook have been rising, and it’s not clear whether performance has improved along with it.

We recently released new research that compares the two largest online display advertising networks, Facebook and the Google Display Network, in terms of reach, growth, performance, targeting options, and ad formats. The results are compiled in the following infographic.

Here’s a summary of what we found:

  • The average click-through rate (CTR) on the Google Display Network is 10 times higher than the average Facebook ad, at 0.4% compared to 0.051%.
  • Google offers twice as many targeting options as Facebook, including remarketing and contextual keyword marketing.
  • There are twice as many ad formats available on the Google Display Network compared to Facebook. Facebook has no options for mobile or video ads.
