| Rehoming Pets during Covid-19
We have seen that you have recently replied to an ad for a Pet on Gumtree, and want to give you some advice & reminders during Covid-19.
A Pet is for Life When you rehome a Pet, it is for life. Do research to ensure that you are choosing the right breed. You need to understand the animal's needs and potential costs. As well as food, toys and other equipment, you will need to pay for veterinary care.
Visits To see a pet, arrange an online viewing. Ask lots of questions, spend time with the animal, and try to see the environment it is being raised in. Ask to see copies of paperwork such as vaccination and treatment records. If the seller is unwilling to allow you to spend the time you need, or not answering questions, you should not proceed with rehoming.
Rehoming & Social Distancing When it comes to rehoming, the seller should come to you. You will need to observe social distancing, so ensure handover is done in a large enough space. Wear gloves, and clean the animal with a pet safe disposable cloth. Ensure the necessary paperwork is completed before meetup.
Beware of Pet Fraud Please be extra vigilant to pet fraud. Typical scams involve fraudsters asking for a deposit, therefore we strongly advise users not to make upfront payments. If a user insists, even by way of a guarantee/retainer, end the conversation, continue your search, and report the user to our Trust & Safety team using the ‘Report Ad’ button. Please remember, payments made in this manner are done at your own risk.
Advice The best advice we can give you at the current time is to do your research and ensure you are rehoming a Pet for the right reasons. You can find advice on our Pet Advice Hub, and at the RSPCA, Government & Pets Advertising Advisory Group websites. | | | |
